BMW Group once again world’s most sustainable automotive company
Sector leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for seventh consecutive year
Munich. The BMW Group has once again been named the automotive
industry’s sector leader in the ranking published today by the SAM Group for the
Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). The BMW Group has therefore been
the world’s most sustainable automobile manufacturer for seven consecutive
years. The BMW Group is also the only company in the automotive industry to
be listed in this family of indexes every year since it was established in 1999.
“The success of the BMW Group is built on a long-term approach and
responsible action. We are pleased to be recognised by the renowned Dow
Jones Sustainability Indexes,” said Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board
of Management of BMW AG. “Being ranked sector leader for the last seven
years underscores our corporate strategy and approach. I would like to thank all
of our company’s 95,000 employees whose day-to-day work makes this
progress possible,” added Reithofer.
Sustainability is an integral part of the BMW Group’s corporate strategy. The
company appointed an environmental officer back in 1973 – the automotive
industry’s first. Since then, the company has systematically refined its concept of
sustainability. In 2009, corporate sustainability was firmly established as a
corporate target at Group level. Today, the Sustainability Board, comprising all
members of the Board of Management, defines the strategic alignment through
binding internal targets, and the Executive Sustainability Committee paves the
way for implementation in the relevant divisions.

BMW Team RLL Finishes Second and Fifth at Baltimore Grand Prix
Baltimore, Md. – Sept. 3, 2011… The No. 56 BMW Team RLL M3 GT of Joey Hand and Dirk Müller finished second at the inaugural American Le Mans Series Baltimore Grand Prix to extend the team’s lead in Manufacturer, Driver and Team GT class championships. Starting from the third position the duo completed 70 laps in the two-hour race at the 2.1-mile, 12-turn temporary circuit running though the streets of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.
The race ended in heartbreak for the polesitting No. 55 M3 GT of Bill Auberlen and Dirk Werner after an overzealous passing attempt by a competitor spun Auberlen from the lead 22 minutes into the second hour of the contest. Up to that point the car had never been further back than second, with Werner leading the first 18 laps of the race. A well-timed pit stop just before the race’s first caution period put Auberlen in the perfect position for their first win of the season, but it was not to be. The BMW ace battled back from eighth, ultimately finishing fifth, to remain third in the driver point standings.
“Obviously we are happy with a second place finish for the No. 56 M3 GT, but the Corvettes certainly did not help our day,” said Bobby Rahal, Team Principal. “I am sorry that Dirk and Bill got punted from what would have been a great finish. Overall we have been consistently on the podium and that means good things for the Driver, Team and Manufacturer Championships! Onward to Laguna Seca Raceway.”

EXPERIENCE 260 LB-FT OF THRUST – WITH FOUR-CYLINDER
THIRST
Since the late ’20s, BMW has created a wide variety of four-cylinder engines – some of which, like the original M3 engine, are among the most revered in the industry.
Just as in 2009 when the BMW 3 Series with Advanced Diesel introduced the U.S. to a new age of clean diesel, BMW is about to energize the future with a totally re-engineered four-cylinder powerplant.
Compared to a naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine of similar power, BMW’s all-aluminum four-cylinder engine is lighter and more compact. It will post quicker 0-60 times – and travel greater distances on each gallon of gasoline. In this 240-hp variant, the exciting thrust of 260 lb-ft of torque is felt from 1250 rpm all the way to 4800 rpm. Incorporating TwinPower Turbo technology, High Precision Direct
Injection, Valvetronic and Double-VANOS, its enhanced performance and efficiency can be heard in the excited growl of its sport-tuned exhaust and engine.
